Think Outside The Box • the unexpected christmas edition

If you've been here a few you may have noticed that I, with DH's help, like to re-use decor/furniture in a different way from its original use, or sometimes just a simple update. Re-using items is economical, keeps things from going to the dump, and it can be fun to think of different uses!

So I hope you enjoy this months Christmas Edition Re-use It project!

Sometimes when I'm out shopping I come across something that really makes my mind immediately go, "Oh, I can do something different with that!"  I get so excited about the idea that popped in my head I can't wait to get home and try it out.  This was one of those times!

Back during the holidays of 2021 DH and I ran into Harbor Freight to grab something.   As I was wandering around the store I came across gold painted log splitter and my brain immediately thought "Christmas Trees"!  I grabbed 3 of them.  DH is kind of (after 40yrs) used to my out of the box/off the wall ideas and asked what I was going to do with them.  I responded and his reply was a shrug and "Ok".  Once bought I needed a base to put them on, so a quick run to Hobby Lobby was made.  Now DH could've made the base
BUT I didn't want to wait for the weekend!  I  can be rather impatient...sometimes! But aren't we all?

Here's What You'll Need

  • Gold or any color log splitter wedge ×3
  • Spray paint, optional. If you don't like the gold
  • These 4in unfinished round wood plaques. I used 2 sets a total of 5 individual plaques
  • Wood Glue
  • hot glue or E6000, I used E6000
  • Stain for the plaques, any color. I used what we had.
  • Either felt or large Furniture pads
  • Low grit sandpaper. Just in case.

How To

  1. If needed sand any rough areas on your plaques. Then wipe thoroughly to remove any dust.
  2. Stain the plaques, let dry.
  3. Paint your wedges, let dry
  4. Add felt or pads to bottom of 3 plaques
  5. For base #1 glue your wedge centered on the top, set it aside to dry. (SEE PICTURES BELOW)
  6. Base #2 glue the tops of 2 plaques together, let dry. (SEE PICTURES BELOW)
  7. Base #3 glue the tops of 2 plaques together. Then glue the bottom of the 3rd plaque to the bottom (which is now the top) of the 2nd plaqu together,  let dry. (SEE PICTURES BELOW)
  8. Now glue the 2nd and 3rd wedge to the 2nd and 3rd bases, let dry.

Now you can add your new "Christmas Trees" anywhere you want...even outside (just make sure you use a polyurethane made for outside)!

What do you think?
