DIY Kitchen Island w/Garbage Can Storage

This post was originally posted on my old blog 'www.maplestoneblog.com'. -----> Hey there! After DH and I finished redoing the kitchen, found | HERE | I decided that I needed an island for a little extra storage and counter space. Because my kitchen is not very wide the island needed to be narrow, yet still be able to hold the garbage can.  The first thing I did was some research to see what I liked about certain islands that were available.

Some were too large, like this one found | HERE | from 'Shades of Blue Interiors', but the hidden trash can and open shelving were spot on. Or what about this one found | HERE | from 'I Should be Mopping the Floor' a little to big, and can't be moved if need be. . . but I love the look.

After looking a hundreds of pictures on Pinterest. I decided that I would like one similar to the island from Shades of Blue Interiors, but made for my small area. Here is what was drawn up.

Thankfully some of the materials needed we already had on hand.Like the wood used for the top was the leaf for our kitchen table and was almost the perfect size...DH cut about 4 inches total off the whole thing.Plus our original garbage can was to big for the island so we bought this one found | HERE |.

This a fairly easy project to put together.  The hardest part was making sure the drawer slides were level and high enough to store a box of garbage bags underneath, but allow for free unobstructed movement.

This island has come in so handy since we finished it.

On the shelf I placed two baskets.  One holds my bundt pan and a few attachments for my rotisserie, the other holds loaves of bread and buns.

The door for the garbage can. I placed a black knob on it. I was hoping to find a different on by now but I just can't seem to find one I like. The rooster is the only item that sits on the island,  it makes it easier and quicker when I need to clean it off.

I'm trying to find the step by step plans we drew up...when found I will provide a link to download them. However the drawing above will help with the over all dimensions.
