Vintage Water Jug to Wireless Lamp
Have you ever needed or wanted to use a lamp somewhere in your home that didn't have an outlet to use? How about a Jug or vase that you love but you're tired of using faux flowers in it? This is the issue I was having in my foyer. My mother, a few years before she passed away, gave me this vintage water Jug. They bought it in Thailand while my dad was stationed overseas (1960-1966). I have always loved it!
The foyer is where I mainly used it; except one year when I used it on my dining table for Christmas.
I was getting tired of faux flowers and I needed/wanted a lamp for the foyer, but my foyer only has 2 outlets and neither of them are on the wall where the lamp needed to go. I thought about using an extension cord and dropping a slim but tall enough lamp inside. I did not want a hole drilled in it! Plus the extension cord needed to be at least 10ft long, white and secured to the baseboard; which I didn't want to do either! So I decided to use a rechargeable light bulb. Now I needed to find a lamp, this was easier said than done! Well, I couldn't find one and I was getting frustrated. Then I had an idea...I would use a huge dowel rod and it didn't take me long (thanks to Amazon) to find one!
◇ Step 1:
- Measure your vase/Jug at the narrowest part of its opening. Mine was 3in
- Measure height and width of jug/vase to get the correct size lampshade
◇ Step 2: Buy your supplies
- 3 inch dowel
- Lamp kit (you can buy these at most hardware stores or department stores)
- Rechargeable light bulbs
- Lampshade
- I needed 4 Silicone cabinet bumpers you may want to have some on hand.
- Stain or paint for dowel
◇ Step 3: tools
- Circular saw, compound miter saw or table saw
- Drill & the right size drill bit
- Painters tape or drill stop... drilling holes to a certain depth/finding the right size drill bit )
◇ Step 4: Assembly
- Place dowel in jug/vase, with pencil mark dowel ¼ inch above the top of jug/vase.
- Cut dowel -> REMEMBER measure twice, cut once!
- Drill hole for threaded dowel in lamp kit
- Stain or paint dowel, let dry completely
- Assemble the lamp kit to the dowel
- If needed, apply 3 to 4 cabinet bumpers to the narrowest part of jug/vase. This adds extra stability if the dowel isn't a snug fit.
- Place dowel/lamp in jug/ vase install light bulb add lampshade and your finished!
